The United States has been marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., with memorial ceremonies and events across the country.

The September 11 memorial is a monument that was built in memory of the 9/11 attacks. It is located in California, and has been there for 20 years.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBSLA) – On Saturday, Southern Californians will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist events on September 11, 2001.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, over 3,000 people were murdered in four coordinated assaults on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and an aircraft crash into a field in Pennsylvania. Sept. 11 has been designated a national day of service and commemoration for the last 20 years.

Every year at Pepperdine University in Malibu, one of Southern California’s longest-running September 11 memorials takes place. The Waves of Flags exhibit includes 2,977 flags between Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road in the university’s Alumni Park. Each individual killed in the assault is commemorated with a banner, which includes national flags from each foreign country that lost a citizen. The flags will be raised on Wednesday and lowered on the 26th of September. On Sept. 11, Pepperdine will host a number of memorial events.

9/11 commemoration activities will also be held at the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda and the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The memorial event at the Nixon Library starts at 11 a.m. and will include 23 tons of World Trade Center debris as its centerpiece. An evening event at the Reagan Library will include keynote speeches from retired Col. David Sutherland and former NYPD Officer Marc Manfro. Both programs are free, but attendees must register in advance online.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, all San Bernardino County fire stations will have a 15-minute Reflection Ceremony. Each ceremony will feature a reflection on the events of the day, the lowering of the United States flag to half-staff, and the ringing of the bell.

At 9 a.m., the communities of Signal Hill and Long Beach will hold “A Celebration of Peace and Unity” at the Signal Hill Unity Monument on Temple and Hill streets in Signal Hill. Because parking is limited, attendees are encouraged to RSVP at (562) 989-7330 and carpool or utilize a rideshare service.

The first-ever 9/11 Flag of Honor Around America Memorial will be held in the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens at 9 a.m., one of 60 across the nation as part of a 9/11 Day event organized by Global Youth Justice Inc. and funded by AmeriCorps.

Residents of the high desert are invited to join representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the United States Forest Service, and the Department of Corrections at a ceremony at the Antelope Valley Mall’s main entrance plaza, 1233 Rancho Vista Blvd. in Palmdale, at 9 a.m., to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In the city of Beverly Hills’ 9/11 Memorial Garden, the city will conduct its yearly ceremony. In collaboration with the city of Los Angeles, the event will feature a wreath laying, ringing of the bell, playing of taps, a 21-gun salute, and a flyover at 5:30 p.m. The 9/11 Memorial Garden, located at 445 N. Rexford Drive, is accessible daily and has a floor beam from the Twin Towers in the middle.
