CNN —
Summer has here, and if you’re looking to spend some time outside, you’ll most likely visit REI. Going to the shop in a hurry because you suddenly decided to go camping this weekend is a rite of passage for many people, and whether you hike, camp, climb, ski, kayak, or cycle, you’ve definitely been in one.
Given the growing popularity of outdoor activities, we decided to put our years of REI buying experience to good use and lay out some of our all-time favorite purchases. Below you’ll discover gear for hiking, climbing, camping, and more that we’ve personally used (some of our products aren’t available or are discontinued, in which case we selected a comparable item from the same company).
SingleNest Hammock by Eno (Rei.com, $49.95)
REI
Eno SingleNest Hammock
We’re constantly on the lookout for excellent hammock spots, and there’s nothing like sleeping off in a hammock, whether it’s on our balcony or at the campground. This one from Eno is very durable, supporting up to 400 pounds, and it’s available in a wide range of colors. If you need extra room, choose the bigger Eno DoubleNest Hammock, which can accommodate two people.
Suspension System for Hammocks by Eno ($29.95; rei.com) is a hammock suspension system designed by Eno.
REI
Eno Atlas Hammock Suspension System
The Eno hammock’s only flaw is that it doesn’t come with a suspension mechanism. The straps are required to hang the hammock, but they are very simple to set up and pack away.
Teton 2-Burner Stove by Camp Chef ($149; rei.com)
REI
Teton 2-Burner Stove by Camp Chef
We’ve had a now-discontinued Camp Chef stove for a little over a year, and it’s been a game changer. When we prepared for ten people over the course of a week, having a burner big enough to accommodate two full-size pots or pans was essential. This Teton stove is a smaller version of the one we have, but it still has enough space to accommodate all of your regular pans. Furthermore, since the burner is lightweight and portable, you may use it in the backyard to enjoy some fresh air around dinnertime.
Glacier Camp Stove by GSI Outdoors ($27.95; rei.com)
REI
Glacier Camp Stove by GSI Outdoors
While the Camp Chef stove is excellent if you need to prepare a lot of food, it’s a little excessive if you’re camping alone or with just one other person. This GSI stove is ideal for tiny camp kitchens. Although it isn’t as compact as an MSR Pocket Rocket, its large burner allows you to balance your cookware. You can also regulate the flame’s intensity, allowing you to accomplish anything from boil water in minutes to simmer over low heat.
Glacier Stainless Frypan by GSI Outdoors ($39.95; rei.com)
REI
Glacier Stainless Frypan by GSI Outdoors
If you intend on cooking at the campground, you can certainly bring your own cookware, but it will likely take up a lot of space and may suffer from additional wear and tear. That’s why we believe getting a different pan for camping is a smart idea. The GSI pan we have is no longer available at REI, but it features a folding handle similar to this one, thus it takes up much less space when packing.
18 Pack REI Co-op REI Co-op REI Co-op REI Co-o ($39.95; rei.com) REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack ($39.95; rei.com)
REI
REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack
This is one of our favorite daypacks since it has everything you need, whether you’re using it for a day at the campground or a hard trek. It has a quick-pull drawcord that opens and shuts instantly, a chest strap, and a water reservoir sleeve so you can remain hydrated without having to stop and take out your water bottle every 10 minutes.
The Deuce #2 UL Backcountry Trowel from TheTentLab ($19.95; rei.com) is a backcountry trowel designed by TheTentLab.
REI
TheTentLab The Deuce #2 UL Backcountry Trowel
You’ll have to defecate if you’re out in the woods for long enough. And, although many campgrounds offer bathrooms, occasionally nature calls and you have to dig a hole. That’s why it’s a good idea to carry some toilet paper and a trusty trowel in your bag at all times, since the alternative is much worse. This lightweight trowel is so small that it can fit almost anywhere in your bag, ensuring that you are always prepared.
Men’s Aether 65 Pack by Osprey ($280; rei.com)
REI
Men’s Osprey Aether 65 Pack
We adore backpacking, but if you’re going to camp in the middle of nowhere, you’ll need a fantastic pack. This one from Osprey is one of our favorites since it has a lot of storage, distributes weight in a really comfortable manner, and the top portion of the pack even detaches and converts into a little daypack.
Mica Basin Camp Chair ($129.95; rei.com) by Big Agnes
REI
Mica Basin Camp Chair by Big Agnes
When going out into the woods for any length of time, camp chairs are a necessity. Sure, you can sit on a boulder or a log, but that’s inconvenient, and the lack of back support isn’t ideal after a long day of trekking. We use a smaller, lighter version of this camp chair that is temporarily out of sale, but this one is just as easy to put up and extremely light, making it easy to take in your bag or down the street to the beach. There’s also a variant with cup holders so you can keep your drink close to hand.
Hiking Boots for Men: Altra Lone Peak Hiker ($140; rei.com)
REI
Men’s Hiking Boots Altra Lone Peak Hiker
We spent a long time looking for the ideal hiking shoe after starting trekking in 2020. We’ve worn conventional hiking boots in the past, but the hefty, cumbersome style never appealed to us. Trail running shoes were appealing, but carrying a large pack required ankle support. Then we came across the Altra Lone Peak Hikers, which are a hybrid of a hiking boot and a trail runner. They’re light, comfy, and feature a large toe box that keeps your toes roomy even when your feet swell after a long day on the trail.
The Tent Nemo Dagger 2 ($429.95; rei.com) is a sequel to the Nemo Dagger.
REI
Nemo Dagger 2 Tent
This is without a doubt the finest tent we’ve ever had. It’s ideal for backpacking since it’s light (under 4 pounds) and doesn’t compromise room. Two-person tents aren’t always as spacious as they seem, and if two people slept in it, you’d be snuggling up all night. The Dagger, on the other hand, offers enough of room for two people to sleep comfortably and even more space for stuff. It also has two large vestibules for the rest of your belongings, keeping them dry and sheltered from the elements, and assembly is extremely easy and quick.
ReVolt 350 Headlamp by Black Diamond ($64.95; rei.com)
REI
ReVolt 350 Headlamp by Black Diamond
This light is one of our favorites since it works with both rechargeable and conventional AAA batteries. This feature is excellent since you don’t have to waste batteries all of the time when you use a rechargeable battery, but if your headlamp runs out of power in the woods, you can just put in more AAAs and not have to worry about recharging the battery right away.
Men’s Climbing Shoes by Scarpa ($189; rei.com)
REI
Climbing Shoes for Men by Scarpa Drago
We’ve had a lot of fun with these Scarpa shoes as a climber. For such an aggressive sneaker, they’re soft and quite comfy. If you’re new to climbing, the La Sportiva Finales, a roomier, more comfortable shoe, is a good choice.
Torrentshell 3L Jacket by Patagonia for Men ($149; rei.com)
REI
Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket for Men
The Patagonia Torrentshell, our pick for the best rain jacket of 2021, is an incredibly waterproof, packable, and durable jacket. We’ve been using it for months and haven’t had any issues.
($40; rei.com) Yeti Rambler Chug Cap Vacuum Bottle
REI
Yeti Rambler Vacuum Bottle With Chug Cap
We can’t tolerate drinking room temperature or warm water throughout the summer. There’s nothing like a gulp of ice-cold water to chill you off, especially when you’re out trekking. That’s why we bring a Yeti double-insulated water bottle with us even when we’re camping and weight is a priority. You’ll still have ice at the end of a long, hot day, and the Rambler bottle is more durable than other double-wall insulated choices.
Rei.com sells the Original Rumpl Puffy Recycled Blanket for $99.
REI
Rumpl Original Puffy Recycled Blanket
We just tested the Rumpl adventure blanket and were blown away by how warm and sturdy it is. The Rumpl is our go-to for a movie night on the sofa even when we aren’t camping.
Explorer Knife with Pouch by Swiss Army ($52; rei.com)
REI
Explorer Knife with Pouch from the Swiss Army
For us, a Swiss Army knife is a must-have item. Even while the knife blade isn’t very large, the amount of helpful tools found on the handy small device is unrivaled. The can opener, corkscrew (you never know when you’ll need to open a bottle of wine!) and scissors are three of our favorite tools.
Grip Trex Dog Boots by Ruffwear ($37.50; rei.com)
REI
Grip Trex Dog Boots from Ruffwear
Of course, if you’re going outside, you’ll want to take your dog with you. We use these dog boots not just on treks, but also on the filthy streets of New York City.
Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag by Ruffwear (beginning at $99.95; rei.com)
CNN/Kai Burkhardt
Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag by Ruffwear
This sleeping bag will keep your dog warm and comfortable in the woods, but our dog prefers to use it as a second dog bed at home. You won’t have to worry about your animal buddy destroying it since it’s tough and water-resistant.
