The Mac Mini is an inexpensive but powerful computer that has been around for years and years…and now the rumors of its demise are finally true!
The Mac Mini was a bit late to the game when it came to seeing a redesign, but with the new 2017 models coming out sooner than any generation before, Apple is finally starting to take notice.
If you’re still using a Mac Mini from 2012, it’s time to upgrade—or at least that’s what the rumors say. The Mac Mini seems like it’s in dire need of a refresh. It’s been five years since a new version was released, and the device still only uses flash storage. Best of all, the device starts at $499.
Apple’s newest Mac Mini models, which were announced in November 2020 and use the company’s proprietary M1 processor, seemed to be a decent bargain. The gadgets, despite their $699 price tag, have the same CPU and GPU as their older and more costly siblings, the MacBook and iMac laptops. So, buying a Mac Mini right now sounds like a no-brainer – but wait, a new model may be on the way.
The Mac Mini is receiving a substantial makeover, according to prior rumors and claims, the majority of which were provided by the LeaksApplePro Twitter account. The leaker’s schematics show a succession of improvements to the Mac Mini’s exterior look and cosmetics, as well as its inside technology.
For a few years, Apple was reluctant to alter the appearance of the Mac Mini, not for a lack of design ideas or money, but for a variety of reasons. Instead, Apple’s decision to keep the computer the same was based on the fact that many of its customers’ server farms utilized Mac Minis in configurations that were, and still are, based on the device’s current physical size.
If the disclosed schematics are accurate, however, this may alter in the near future. The rumored variant, which is expected to be released in 2021/2022, will have a much thinner and smaller chassis than the present model. It will also have a glass top similar to the front chin of the new 24-inch iMac computer, but it is unknown if the color choices will be the same.
The schematics also show how many ports the new Mac Mini computer has and where they are located. To top it off, the device’s upgraded port hub will have an HDMI connector for monitor connection, Ethernet input for networking, four Thunderbolt 4 ports, and two USB-A slots. Unfortunately, the 3.5mm headphone port seems to have been removed by Apple, since it is not depicted in the schematics.
Apple’s decision to remove the headphone port from its cellphones allowed for the creation of a genuinely waterproof iPhone, but it makes little sense for Mac Mini PCs. Although the lack of a 3.5mm jack in the schematics doesn’t mean it won’t be included in the final device, music producers should get their Thunderbolt-to-headphone-jack converters ready.
Apple is most likely to utilize its M1X CPU in the next Mac Mini in terms of hardware. While this would transform the next computer into a true powerhouse, the business has yet to confirm this. In any case, all indications point to a rise in CPU and GPU core counts, as well as a potential RAM extension. Currently, all Mac Minis and M1-equipped devices have 16 GB of RAM, but speculations indicate that the next model will have 32 GB or possibly 64 GB.
It’s worth mentioning that, starting in 2020, the new model will not replace the existing M1 Mac Mini. Instead, Apple wants to remove the Intel-powered Mac Mini model from the company’s current portfolio in order to cut connections with Intel’s CPUs.
Regardless, the leaked schematics provide very little information about the Mini’s core components, making price prediction almost impossible. According to some estimates, the basic model, with 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and an M1X CPU, will cost about $1,200, with more powerful alternatives costing more.
According to previous rumors, the new Mac Mini would be launched with the newest MacBook models, which will have better mini-LED displays. However, it seems that idea has been abandoned, and the new model’s introduction has been postponed owing to “marketing reasons.”
To be sure, “marketing reasons” is a hazy explanation that enables Apple to tease and unveil the gadget at its events and other launches, with the actual introduction of the new Mac Mini coming last.
Apple’s Mac Mini, the world’s smallest Mac, has been around for over 7 years now. It was the first Mac to ship with OS X 10.5 Leopard, and the first to get the Retina display. But, as any Apple aficionado can tell you, the Mac Mini has been a bit overshadowed by its bigger brother, the Mac Pro, since its launch..
