The future of Paul Pogba at Manchester United remains a mystery, according to ESPN’s Insider Notebook. PLUS: It’s possible United has found a successor.

As Pogba’s future takes a fresh turn, Barcelona steps in.

According to ESPN, Barcelona is the latest team to be offered Manchester United’s Paul Pogba on a free transfer next summer.

Pogba’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, and his representative, Mino Raiola, is in contact with some of Europe’s biggest clubs in the hopes of finding him a new club. Pogba has been contacted by Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and a number of Premier League teams. He may begin talks on January 1.

Pogba has not made a decision on his future and has not ruled out the possibility of staying at United, but he will investigate his other alternatives. As they seek to rebuild their team under new president Joan Laporta, Barca would consider acquiring the France international on a free transfer.

Despite the fact that there would be no cost, the Catalan club is uncertain if they would be able to pay the commission Raiola would want given their current financial situation. Barcelona has a gross debt of €1.4 billion. There are also concerns about Pogba’s ability to fit into the club’s new salary structure, which comes at a time when some of the team’s highest-paid players are being asked to accept pay cuts.

Salaries and amortisation payments still account for approximately 80% of the season’s expected income of €765 million, according to Laporta. The league’s financial regulations require a number of approximately 70%, but Barca’s is even lower this season as they try to make up for previous losses. — Moises Llorens and Sam Marsden

Tchouameni as a substitute for Pogba?

Aurelien Tchouameni is the name on everyone’s lips right now, so move over Pogba. As the battle to sign one of Europe’s best talents heats up, scouts from Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City have all seen the Monaco midfielder in action this season.

According to ESPN, a price of between €50 million and €60 million would be required to get Monaco to the negotiation table, with Tchouameni on United’s radar if a new contract for Pogba cannot be reached. Chelsea had previously shown interest in the 21-year-old, and the Champions League champions are friendly with his agent Jonathan Kebe, who also represents Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. Chelsea attempted to sign Kounde last summer but were unable to reach an agreement.

– Laurens: France has regained its footing.

Tchouameni, a 21-year-old Frenchman, has five caps and was excellent in France’s Nations League final victory against Spain. He also excelled on his full international debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina last month, and has had a fantastic start to the Ligue 1 season after a strong campaign last year.

Since transferring from Bordeaux to the Principality for €18 million in January 2020, he has made significant progress under coach Niko Kovac. Monaco had hoped to receive bids last summer, but Europe’s heavyweights were focused elsewhere. Given Tchouameni’s recent success, the Ligue 1 club is bracing for a slew of offers for their prized asset. Laurens, Julien

Sterling will compete for a City spot before deciding on his future.

According to ESPN, Raheem Sterling wants to concentrate on regaining his position at Manchester City before choosing whether or not to prolong his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling’s contract expires in 2023, and although City would want to extend it, the England international will first guarantee that he continues to play a vital part for the club. Since joining City from Liverpool in 2015, the 26-year-old has won three Premier League championships, but has struggled for playing time after falling out of favor with manager Pep Guardiola, starting just two of City’s seven Premier League games this season.

According to ESPN, City’s coaching staff has been pleased by Sterling’s efforts in training to adjust to a new No.9 position after Sergio Aguero’s departure and the summer acquisition of Jack Grealish. Despite City’s 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, he received praise for his performance in the position.

Sterling hinted at his dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time on Thursday when he indicated he could move if things don’t change, and although he claimed he’d be open to playing overseas, sources told ESPN he hasn’t made up his mind.

Sources informed ESPN that if Sterling decides his future lay elsewhere, Barcelona will keep an eye on his position and may try to lure him to Camp Nou. Barca manager Ronald Koeman has said that his team is lacking in attack, with breadth and speed being a particular issue for the stuttering Catalans, who have only won once in their past six games.

While Barca CEO Ferran Reverter has said that the club has to cut its salary bill even more, he has also stated that money may be available for a signing in January, but reports suggest that any move for Sterling would be contingent on him being available on loan at first.

With Dembele, Barcelona is afraid of another Ilaix.

According to ESPN, Barcelona is concerned that a delay in extending Ousmane Dembele’s contract is due to his agency soliciting interest from Premier League teams.

Dembele’s contract with Barcelona ends next summer, and he has yet to sign a new one. The player has indicated a wish to remain longer, but negotiations with his agent, Moussa Sissoko, have not gone well.

From January 1, when he enters the last six months of his contract, the France striker is free to talk with other clubs, and insiders claim Barca sees similarities with Ilaix Moriba’s departure last summer. Ilaix’s contract was likewise coming to an end. When his representatives refused to extend his contract, Barca sent him to practice with the B squad and informed him that he would not be able to play for the club until he signed new terms. In August, the teenage midfielder joined for RB Leizpig for approximately €20 million, with his agents earning a sizable fee on the transaction.

If Dembele, who was on the verge of joining Manchester United in 2020, were to opt out of his contract and leave Barcelona for free, those involved in the transfer would be eligible for a large signing bonus.

The following month, according to Barca sources, will be crucial as the January transfer market approaches. If a deal with Dembele’s agency cannot be reached, the former Borussia Dortmund winger may be forced to watch the remainder of the season from the stands. Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens

Jese, a brawl, a vehicle accident, and “false news”

Following allegations that his girlfriend had driven over his foot with her vehicle during a dispute, Jese Rodriguez, a former Real Madrid and PSG striker, slammed “false news” and called for “respect.”

Jese, who has three goals and four assists in LaLiga 2 this season for local club Las Palmas, was involved in the altercation after attending a performance at the Gran Canaria Arena on Sunday. A viral video seemed to show Jese hobbling leaving the event and being helped by pals.

Although Jese was struck by the car, sources informed ESPN that it was unclear if the incident was deliberate or an accident, but both the player and his girlfriend, model and reality TV personality Aurah Ruiz, disputed the allegations on social media.

Jese was missing from training on Monday and Tuesday, raising concerns that he might miss Las Palmas’ derby against local rivals Tenerife on Saturday, before returning to action on Wednesday.

As a teenager in Real Madrid’s academy, the 28-year-old was a great prospect, breaking the record most goals scored in a season for B-team Castilla in 2012-13. A cruciate ligament injury derailed his development in 2014, and he went on to have unsuccessful stints at PSG, Stoke City, Real Betis, and Sporting Lisbon before returning to Las Palmas this year.

Jese has made news for his off-the-field antics, including recording a slew of reggaeton songs under the moniker ‘Jey M.’ Rodrigo Faez and Alex Kirkland

Fenerbahce made a transfer error by sending money to a Dutch auto dealer.

After Fenerbahce mistakenly transferred the money to a Dutch auto dealership, Empoli got the latest instalment for the departure of midfielder Miha Zajc a year late.

Empoli agreed to sell Zajc to the Turkish side for €4 million in three installments in January 2019. The final payment of €830,000, on the other hand, did not appear in their account until September 2021. On September 30, 2020, Fenerbahce completed the payment, however they entered the incorrect recipient’s bank information, and the money wound up to a vehicle dealership in Doetinchem, Netherlands.

Empoli approached the business to seek the money after learning of the administrative mistake, but it was denied. Empoli threatened to rescind the move, prompting Fenerbahce to sue the Dutch firm, and it wasn’t until September of the following year that a Gelderland court decided in favor of the Turkish club.

In January 2017, Slovenian international Zajc joined Empoli from Olimpija Ljubljana in his hometown, and after relegation to Italy’s second tier, he played a key part in Empoli’s promotion back to Serie A the following season.
