Rams quarterback Jared Goff admitted that the Rams are headed into the season with some unfinished business, and that includes the presence of rookie WR Cooper Kupp. Goff joked that the two had to make up for the time they spent on the couch last year, and that there’s been some progress as the Rams have been practicing.
After a tumultuous 2017 season in which Case Keenum struggled to find his footing behind Sam Bradford’s injury, the Rams will be hosting their first OTAs this week. Before the Rams head to the practice field, we can look back at last season and see how the team fared drafting Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp and what their performances may look like this year.
After a disappointing season in 2018, Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp are back on track this summer. The two stars have gotten back to work with the Rams and have been jelling well all off-season. According to head coach Sean McVay, Stafford and Kupp have been hard at work to knock down the rust from their down seasons.
It’s still very early for a new partnership between Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and star receiver Cooper Kapp. But if the first signs of the Aries offseason are any indication, that relationship will be fruitful. Stafford has praised Kapp and veteran Robert Woods since he acquired them from the Detroit Lions. This deal is historic, as it is the first time former number one owners have switched teams in one transaction. The Lions selected Stafford as their top pick after an 0-16 season in 2009. Los Angeles made an offer for Jared Goff in 2016.
Cooper Kapp, former small school star, is a good
Unlike the aforementioned quarterbacks, Cooper Kapp was not one of the biggest names in college football and did not play at a top 5 school. Instead, Kapp went from Eastern Washington to the NFL, where he became a superstar. As a junior, Kapp won the Walter Payton Award as FCS Player of the Year. He was also a four-time All-American. And that while he played on red grass, for which he is very grateful. After catching 428 passes for 6,464 yards and 73 touchdowns in four seasons at Eastern Washington, Kupp went in the third round to the Rams in 2017. Kapp started six games as a rookie and became a starter in 2018. The torn ACL cost him the second half of the season. But he came back in the last two seasons, catching 186 balls and throwing 13 touchdowns. In 2019 and 2020, Kapp led the Rams in receptions with 94 and 92, respectively. And that’s despite Woods scoring a few more goals in that time. Woods’ lead was 139-134 in 2019 and 129-124 last season.
Matthew Stafford made his appearance in Detroit

Stafford ranks 16th on the all-time passing list (45,109) and all-time touchdowns (282). Of course, he was also criticized for those numbers, and one media outlet called him a Pad Statford. If he hits his average of 23 touchdowns, Stafford will move up to 11th on this list. He would have skipped a decent list: Johnny Unitas, Warren Moon, Carson Palmer and John Elway, in that order. His season average of 3,759 points places him 13th, ahead of Vinny Testaverde, Palmer and Fran Tarkenton. But what Stafford is hoping for in Los Angeles is success in the postseason. During his tenure, the Lions made the playoffs only three times, losing in the Wild Card game each time. (Yes, they should have beat Dallas in 2014, but that won’t change now). The deal was financially attractive to the Rams. Goff received a massive four-year, $134 million contract extension in 2019. Stafford has two years and $43 million left on the five-year contract he signed in 2017. His contract also contains very favorable terms. The Rams can convert all or part of his base salary into a signing bonus. This bonus can then be distributed pro rata over the remaining term of the transaction. If nothing else, this is a good safety net for Rams general manager Les Snead.
Stafford’s playoff chances are now much higher than they were before

So Matthew Stafford will fancy his chances. Los Angeles reached the Super Bowl at the end of the 2018 season, where they lost to the New England Patriots. Last season, they beat the Seattle Seahawks on the road before losing to Green Bay in the divisional round. After the NFL Draft, Los Angeles remained one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season. The Matthew Stafford trade was a big part of that upside. The Rams went from a top 10 team before the deal to a top 3 team after the deal. The only teams ahead are the ones they know. The Kansas City Chiefs are the favorites, followed by the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay will try to become the first NFL champion to win back-to-back games since the Patriots in 2003 and 2004. It was a bold move by the LA Rams to fire Goff. They were able to bring in a quarterback of Matthew Stafford’s caliber, which should have made the process easier. But it’s still rare for a coach and general manager to give a player a nine-figure contract extension and then sell him after two years. Statistics provided by Pro Football Reference.
