The former quarterback of the Denver Broncos has been a thorn in the side of many opponents during his football career but there are more than a few things about the man off-the-field that he will never be able to speak about.

It was a cold, desolate day in February of 2012 when John Elway made the call to retire his number. The moment he hung up the phone, he knew he had made the right decision. Just a few hours later, he was at the Denver Broncos practice facility, cutting off his jersey and throwing it in the trash with a heavy heart. But the epiphany he had on that day wasn’t just about football. He realized that he was wasting an opportunity in his life by not spending more time with one of his greatest passions, his family.

After an illustrious football career, the Hall of Fame quarterback retired from the game in 1997 and opened a restaurant. It didn’t go as well as he had hoped, and Elway eventually retired from the restaurant business—but on his terms. “I got out of the restaurant business without getting out of the restaurant business,” he said. “I could have sold my restaurant, but I didn’t have any intention of ever doing that until I thought I was getting out of it the wrong way.”

John Elway has resigned at his own request as quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Elway was 38 years old and had won two consecutive Super Bowls when he decided after the 1998 NFL season that he had had enough. In 234 regular season games, Elway was tackled by defenders 516 times. Almost no one blamed him for the loss, as the NFL league office made a decision in November 2020 that almost certainly contributed to Elway’s departure for the second time in his career.

John Elway had two successful careers with the Denver Broncos

He led the league in passing yards just once, and his ratio of 300 touchdowns to 226 interceptions was not good. But his 14-7 playoff record with 27 assists helped get him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Twelve years after his retirement, Elway joins the Broncos’ front office and takes over the leadership of football operations. After five years without participating in the postseason, the Broncos have reached the playoffs in each of Elway’s first five seasons. They won one Super Bowl and played in another. The victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 was a highlight; since then, the Broncos have failed to make the playoffs for five consecutive seasons. After the 2020 season, Elway announced that he would remain president of the team, but would hand over the role of general manager to George Paton.

COVID-19 made November difficult for Elway

. The NFL has handled the COVID-19 pandemic better than most leagues will in 2020. Many players waived and many others were unable to play after contracting the virus, but the NFL was able to play all 256 regular season games and finish the playoffs on schedule. But that doesn’t mean it was easy. At Tennessee, 23 players and staff members of the Titans organization tested positive in Week 4, leading to postponements and a number of schedule changes. Soon after, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive and the team flew to Kansas City on the day of the game against the Chiefs. Since then, the NFL has been open about why some games are moved and others are not. Awards according to the league office: The games will continue if contact tracing rules out permanent transmission of the virus. Commissioner Roger Goodell ruled out postponement on opposition grounds, saying an entire position group wiped out by a contact suit is no reason for postponement. The Cleveland Browns played without their top receivers in Week 16, and the Detroit Lions changed most of their coaches that same weekend. A week later, the Saints played against the Carolina Panthers without a running back. However, none of this compares to what Elway and the Broncos faced in Week 12. Elway tested positive for COVID-19 in November, and the response from the NFL office quickly made him feel even worse.

Elway in the NFL: I’m hanging up now

. The Broncos’ quarterback problem in Week 12 was making a few mistakes that led to wide receiver Kendall Hinton taking over the game against New Orleans. Backup QB Jeff Driskel, who wasn’t even allowed in the practice room, tested positive. The NFL suspended Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles for close contact with Driskel after video footage showed they were not always wearing masks. Instead of moving the game to Monday or Tuesday (the Saints were willing to do so), which would have allowed the QBs to go through the protocol process, NFL chief football operations administrator Dawn Aponte told Elway that the league wanted the game to be played at the scheduled time. Elway was overwhelmed. After the roster changed several times in October and November, he couldn’t believe the Broncos would have to play without a quarterback. I was a little upset about that, Elway told Mike Silver in an interview with Well, I hung up with the union. I said: Dawn, I’m sorry. I’m done, and I’m hanging up. At least I did it with respect. All statistics are from Pro Football Reference. The two-time Super Bowl Champion has made a name for himself in the business world, but that’s not why we’re talking about him today..
