All die-hard golf fans remember Woods’ epic 2000/01 season, in which he won the first Tiger Slam in history. In 2000 Woods won the US Open at Pebble Beach by a record 15 strokes, in 2000 he beat Bob May in a playoff to win the PGA Championship at Valhalla, and in 2001 he beat David Duvall at the Masters to win his fourth consecutive major championship.
Amidst all this, Woods won the first Open Championship of his career at the Old Course in St Andrews, the birthplace of golf.
Tiger shot a 5-under 67 in the first round of the tournament and took the lead in the tournament one stroke behind Ernie Els. He then played a 6-under 66 in the second round and never looked back.
Woods shot another 67 in the third round and extended his lead to six strokes. He finished the tournament with a round of 69 to take a three-stroke lead over the rest of the field and eventually win by eight strokes.
It was a dominant round of golf, as fans have come to expect from the 24-year-old phenom.
Since Woods won the British Open in 2000, he has not lifted the Claret Cup for four consecutive years. That all changed in 2005, when he won the 134th World Cup. Won the St Andrews Open.
This time the field really challenged Woods for the title, as Colin Montgomery and Jose Maria Olazabal challenged him on Sunday. But golf’s greatest finisher beat the two veterans to win by five strokes with a score of 14 under par.
A year later, Tiger won the Open again, this time at Royal Liverpool. Chris DiMarco was Woods’ biggest rival on Sunday, but he withstood the pressure and won by two strokes ahead at 18 under par. It was one of the most emotional victories of Woods’ career, just three months after the death of his father, Earl Woods.
After 2006, Tiger came close to winning the Open several times, but has never been named Golfer of the Year since. To date he has three British Open titles to his name.
Woods returned to action at the 2012 Royal Lytham Open. He entered the final round five strokes behind leader Adam Scott, but a score of 73, higher than 3, on Sunday jeopardized his chances of winning another Open Championship. He finished in third place.
In 2013, Tiger entered the final round at Muirfield just two strokes behind leader Lee Westwood, but an unusual 3-over 74 in the final round dropped him to sixth place.
Woods last led by a stroke in the final round of the 2018 Open at Carnoustie, but a double bogey on the 11th and a bogey on the 12th gave him the lead again. led him into a hole he couldn’t get out of. He only finished the tournament in second place.
