In a world where everything is going faster and becoming more tailored, China’s military capability has been catching up to its ambition. What does this mean for the United States?

China has been testing a hypersonic missile, which could be launched from Chinese cities and travel at five times the speed of sound. China’s ambitions for military might have alarmed its neighbors in Asia as well as some US allies overseas.

China’s “china hypersonic missile” is a long-range ballistic missile that can travel at speeds of up to 20 times the speed of sound. The Chinese military has tested this weapon, which is capable of carrying nuclear weapons, numerous times in recent months.

Most Americans think the United States possesses the world’s most powerful military, but this is changing. The news that China has successfully tested a new hypersonic missile should serve as a wake-up call to the nation.

According to the Financial Times, “China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August that circled the globe before rushing towards its target.” Hypersonic missiles are more difficult to detect and destroy than ballistic missiles, and they might elude missile defenses in the United States.

The hypersonic revelation comes after the discovery this year in the Chinese desert of hundreds of new missile silos, probably definitely for nuclear missiles. This isn’t the action of a country only concerned with maintaining its sovereignty. China’s objectives are worldwide, and one of them is to project military strength in order to express its political and economic interests.

This is crucial to comprehend because the next great battle will not resemble the last one. The majority of World War II’s damage was spared the United States’ country. However, cyber assaults, hypersonic missiles, and autonomous vehicles with artificial intelligence will be used in the next battle, putting the United States at danger of attack from afar. Hide behind fortress America is no longer an option, if it ever was.

It’s especially concerning if allegations are true that the hypersonic test caught US intelligence off surprise. The United States has intelligence agencies in place to avoid shocks like these. In 2020, the Intelligence Community will receive $85.8 billion from 18 entities. Congress should look into what we’re paying for and receiving in return.

Stopping aid to the People’s Liberation Army would also be beneficial. According to the Washington Post, the Chinese company Phytium Technology collaborates with the PLA on hypersonic flying research.

In a statement, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) stated, “While the Biden administration correctly put Phytium on the Commerce Department’s Entity List, it has not implemented the Foreign Direct Product Rule that was effectively utilized to oppose Huawei.” As a result, he noted, Phytium’s study is still possible thanks to technologies developed in the United States and manufactured by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

None of this implies that a fight with China is inevitable, much alone imminent. The idea is that the post-Cold War period in which the United States could presume military superiority is finished. Asymmetric weapons like cyber are already being used by regional nations like Russia and Iran to target the United States. In addition to a blue-water fleet and anti-satellite missiles, China is developing comparable capabilities.

The globe is becoming more hazardous as the United States establishes a cradle-to-grave entitlement state while downsizing its military.
