Quarterback Chris Streveler is 64-years-old and retired. But he was able to make a career out of something else: backing up Kyler Murray, the Cardinals first round pick in 2019 NFL Draft.

The “chris streveler” is the QB for the St. Louis Cardinals, who has $1.4 million in the bank thanks to his job as backup for Kyler Murray’s backup.

It may be a thankless profession being a backup quarterback in the NFL. However, for certain quarterbacks, such as Arizona Cardinals quarterback Chris Streveler, it might be a dream job. Being the backup may also earn you a lot of money. Colt McCoy, the Cardinals’ second backup quarterback, earned nearly $14 million as a backup quarterback with the Washington Football Team.

Even backups who are presently on the practice squad, like quarterback Ryan Griffin, Tom Brady’s backup’s backup, earned $6.5 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This raises the issue of how much money Streveler has earned by assisting Kyler Murray.

After winning the MVFC Offensive Player of the Year and finishing second in the Walter Payton Award in 2017, Streveler went undrafted in 2018. He signed with the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers after the draft.

Streveler appeared in 35 games with the Bombers in two seasons, starting 12 of them. With 242 completions in 374 attempts, he passed for 2,698 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. In 2019, the Bombers won the Grey Cup, the CFL’s Super Bowl. Streveler was released by the Bombers in February 2020 to seek an NFL career.

In 2020, the quarterback signed a reserve/future contract with the Arizona Cardinals. He appeared in five games but did not start any of them, completing 11 of 16 passes for 105 yards and one score. His contract was a three-year, $2,285,000 deal with no guaranteed money, according to Spotrac, but he’s already made $1.4 million.

Where does Streveler stand among the quarterbacks for the Arizona Cardinals?

Kyler Murray is the Cardinals’ primary quarterback, with veteran quarterback McCoy serving as his backup. McCoy has been in the NFL since being selected by the Browns in 2010.

The now-35-year-old spent three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, one season with the San Francisco 49ers, and six seasons with the Washington Football Team. McCoy signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants in 2020, and then a one-year contract with the Cardinals in 2021.

Despite having a great collegiate career in which he started all four years at the University of Texas, McCoy has spent the most of his NFL career as a backup quarterback. And, despite being classified as inactive for Week 4, Streveler remains his backup on the Cardinals.

Is it a dream job to be a third- or fourth-string quarterback?

It’s a fairly decent bargain if you don’t have to take all the major hits every game and you get to learn from veteran quarterbacks. Especially if you earn a six- or seven-figure income. If catastrophe hits, whether it’s an injury or a poor performance, you’ll have an opportunity to save your club and perhaps advance up the roster. Furthermore, even if you are on the practice squad, you will get a Super Bowl ring if your team wins the game.

However, being a backup quarterback is not always a pleasant experience. Because of their backup position, they are often evaluated severely when they do have a chance to play. When Boomer Esiason stepped in for the injured Murray in a 2020 game, he threw some serious shade at Streveler and the CFL. This backfired on Esiason since he was stepping in for Tony Romo as a backup commentator for that game.

Despite the fact that backups like McCoy and Streveler are unlikely to see much action outside of the preseason, they remain important parts of the club. It’s also likely that the pay isn’t bad.
