Nintendo released the latest Animal Crossing game on New 3DS and 2DS systems in Japan, but it has yet to be released in North America. The game is set to release sometime this October for the Nintendo Switch.

Brewster, the traditional café owner and gyroid aficionado, will make some kind of comeback in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, according to a recent surprise Nintendo Direct. Only a brief footage of the cafe’s façade, which can be seen in the game’s museum, was released, along with a hint that additional information would be revealed at an Animal Crossing Direct in October.
The remainder of the Direct focused on single-player games, with just a few crumbs for online multiplayer fans: Splatoon 3 hinted at the reintroduction of mammalians (beyond the two cat judges) in narrative mode, and Nintendo announced it’s introducing some additional SNES, N64, and even Sega Genesis games for both local and internet multiplayer fun (rejoice Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero lovers!) for an unknown extra fee. While the availability of vintage gaming for online play without the need of an emulator is exciting, Brewster’s return to a game that has irritated even die-hard fans is much more so.
We’ve been asking about gyroids and Brewster since at least September 2020, and although Nintendo PR said it will “offer updates” on the game when it failed to make an appearance at the E3 Nintendo Direct, it didn’t inspire much confidence. This new Direct certainly does. While some small additions, such as a few Day of the Dead goods in a snapshot given in Nintendo’s press room, are possible, we’re hoping for more and have asked Nintendo whether Brewster will be bringing our singing clay friends back anytime soon.
