If you are new to yoga, don’t worry, it’s a great way to get started in your day without blowing your workouts. After all, it’s all about the breath and not how intense your workout is. Yet, even experienced yogis have their share of questions, regarding the poses and sequences they did. So, in this article, we are going to share a list of the most popular questions asked by new yogis, that will help you to ease your way into yoga, so you can become a pro at it.

The first yoga class can be intimidating, and for some it takes until the second, fifth, or even hundredth class. There will always be someone in the class who is stronger, limber or more advanced than you.

The first thing I want to say to new students who are considering taking yoga classes is to throw their ego out the window. Yoga is not a competition. What your neighbor’s body can do today has nothing to do with what yours can do.

Everyone has to start as a beginner. I know this is all easier said than done, and it’s a very human feeling to feel uncomfortable when entering a new world, especially one as intimidating as a first yoga class. To help you out, here are some answers to beginners’ most frequently asked questions about yoga.

1. Where should I hold my first yoga class?

Most local studios offer classes for beginners. But I would like to point out that many studios that advertise classes at all levels actually cater to their regular customers who come every week and are very familiar with the practice.

I think it’s best to start with classes that are clearly labeled as beginner or level 1. It’s also not a bad idea to try a yin yoga class where you spend time in more passive poses for beginners. Some of the best beginner classes I’ve taken are not at yoga studios, but at community centers like the YMCA or gyms that offer studio classes.

Do your research and don’t get discouraged if your first session doesn’t go well. Finding the right style and the right teacher is crucial to finding your practice.

2. Why should I start with yoga?

Yoga has many benefits and is suitable for absolutely everyone – young, old, limber, inflexible, weak and strong. Yoga is more than just a physical exercise. It is a homecoming for your body, mind and soul.

It will push you to your limits and teach you a lot about yourself. I highly recommend yoga to anyone looking for an outlet to relieve stress, an added balance to workouts, a way to get rid of stiffness in the body, or just a way to connect with a new community.

3. I am not flexible, can I do it?

Fun fact: It took me 5 years of yoga classes before I could finally touch my toes. Yes, five years. I tell you this because the most common fear I hear from people before they start yoga classes is that they are inflexible.

This is how I usually answer: Great, me too! Suppleness is not a requirement for the practice of yoga, but over time it becomes one of the results of the practice.

4. What should I wear and take with me?

Wear clothing in which you feel comfortable and which gives you full freedom of movement. I prefer to wear leggings and a tank top, and take a long-sleeved shirt at the beginning and end of class.

Bring water and a towel if you tend to sweat. Leave your socks and sneakers at home and train barefoot. If you have a yoga mat, bring it with you, but you can also rent one from most studios.

5. Where can I buy a carpet?

A good yoga mat can make all the difference. But if you’re not sure you want to do yoga, you shouldn’t ask too much of yourself. Bring a mat with you to the studio while you make your decision.

When you are ready to make a purchase, there are thousands of options open to you. There are some good, inexpensive options in sporting goods stores. There are also many quality and trendy options. If you feel comfortable, I would talk to your yoga teacher about what he is comfortable with and even try out his mat if he allows it.

Personally, I prefer a thinner mat because I find it harder to balance on an elastic one. For some, a pillow may be necessary if they have knee pain when sitting.

6. What are the different styles of yoga?

It seems like every day there is a new style of yoga. It’s great because it’s very easy to find the right one for you. There are slow classes like Yin, Soft and Restorative Yoga. In these classes, you spend a lot of time on the floor in long, deep stretches.

7. Why all the resistance?

8. What should I do if I can’t remember the names of the postures?

Instead of doing it while you sleep, the challenge is to stay aware of your breathing and your body without distracting thoughts.

11. I cannot silence my mind during meditation, what can I do?

My best advice is to not judge yourself for not being able to meditate. Try to relax and don’t blame yourself for thinking what you’re not thinking.

Accept where you are now and respect what comes to you without judging it. Meditation is a practice, and it can be much more difficult than the asanas or the physical aspect of yoga.

12. I am too nervous to go to the studio, how do I start?

Yoga is so popular these days that you don’t have to leave your house to practice it. There are many online yoga classes available, and it’s a great way to get into the swing of things without leaving your comfort zone!
